GPC's Environmental Club 2nd Storm Drain Marking event
Hello, this project will be with the City of Alpharetta as opposed to our last project with Roswell from last semester in the spring 2014. · Storm drain marking event (for non-point source pollution) 12:30 pm-2:30 pm Saturday November 1st. Meeting location will be directly in front of the main entrance of the Alpharetta campus at 12:30 pm since it is so close and from there we will do a demonstration for practice, break into teams depending upon the amount of students, and attempt to mark storm drains on a grid which encompasses the street across from us and all of park bridge pkwy (a ton of residencies in the community with natural features across the street of our campus).
WHY?
WHY?
Storm drain marking is a hands-on project for volunteers who are interested in educating the public about non-point source pollution prevention. The markers are placed on storm drain inlets and intend to remind citizens to help protect our waters from pollution that can be harmful to fish and wildlife and increase weed and algae growth. The problem is that this pollution can only be stopped if a collective effort is made and with our environments at risk of destruction, it is imperative to make sure that something is done. Even the best plan for managing watersheds and controlling non-point source pollution cannot succeed without community participation and cooperation. And aggressive public outreach and education program, therefore, is essential for local communities to develop and maintain. Education and outreach strategies and ideas would, raise the community’s consciousness about the importance of water quality and the watersheds draining to our ponds, lakes, rivers, and eventually the ocean."
